“IAA” I painted this painting 10 years ago in the months after the attack on 9/11. It wanted to capture some of the sadness and the profound sense of hope, empathy, and unity that arose after that tragedy. 10 years ago I woke to the television news coverage of that shockingly horrific scene that was the terrorist attack on New York and Washington DC.  It seemed like something from a movie, something that could not be real. But it was. The events of that day had a major impact on the world and, as I reflect on my own life over the past 10 years, like ripples emanating from a stone dropped in a lake, they have directly affected my own life in many ways.  From small things like the extra hassel of airport security, canine police running bomb checks at the ferry terminal that I take to work, and a heightened awareness world events, to more personal impacts:  A few months after 9/11 I lost my job due to the tech-bubble bursting. That was one of the first ‘big’ setbacks I had ever had in my life. It took my career in directions I may not have taken otherwise. 9/11 sparked an interest in current events, history, and politics that has stayed with me ever sense. And now, my younger brother is fighting on the front lines in Afghanistan. He was only 9 years old on the fateful day that launched the war he is now engaged in.  What ever your views are regarding the ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ of events that have shaped our world over the last 10 years, I hope you’ll join me today in reverencing the lives lost on 9/11 and reflect on how it has affected your own life.
