Q:What is the biggest challenge when you paint large scenes, and do you usually have the whole idea planned out before you start painting? Sorry, that was more like two questions. :)

The biggest challenge in painting large or busy scenes is the time commitment. You can get lost in the details and pour a lot of hours into getting everything right. I never feel like they really get finished.

I go through multiple rounds of rough concept sketches that change over time as I revise the composition and refine the theme. The finished paintings tend to deviate from the sketches as well. It’s an organic process. I always leave room for improvisation and happy accidents.

For example, here is the very first sketch i did while coming up with an idea for the Arrested Development painting. You can see a lot changed between this first idea and the final painting.
