I usually work with about 7-10 paint pigments per painting (ooo, check out that alliteration!). For example, a palette like the following:

Quinacridone Pink

Cadmium Red medium

Phthalo Blue GS

Cobalt Blue

Cadmium yellow medium

Pyrrol Orange

Titanium White

Lamp Black
